…Sergeant Anderson’s team spent the night in the jungle and moved out at daybreak to carry out its mission. After two hours on the trail, the five men received sudden fire from all sides. A reinforced insurgent platoon had let the point man pass through the firing zone and then had opened fire. SGT Anderson received a wound in the knee, dropped to the ground, and ordered his assistant to get the patrol undercover and radio for help. Simultaneously, he laid down a base of fire, which suppressed the insurgents momentarily and allowed his comrades to take defensive positions. To prevent further casualties, SGT Anderson ordered his men not to expose themselves to come to his aid. As he continued to place effective fire on the Viet Cong force, he was mortally wounded.
